As most adults can attest, golf is a game
that is best learned at a young age. In addition to being in
better physical shape, youth players have the advantage of time
to hone their fundamentals. Participants in the GBSG junior
programs are very fortunate on several fronts. First, we have a
very enthusiastic professional staff that believes in working
with kids. Second, our teachers include PGA pro’s, a
physical
therapist, nutritionist and a sport psychologist. And third, our
home, Cheval Golf and Country Club, welcomes younger players!
Our basic philosophy for developing
junior players, who enjoy and excel at golf, consists of three
stages. First, we develop fundamentals, which include rules and
etiquette. Next, we apply these fundamentals to the individual
player based on physical ability, learning rate, and commitment
to practice. Lastly, we teach them how to play the game
competitively. This final stage of development introduces the
benefits of course management, fitness training and mental
preparation. Because juniors develop at different paces, we
offer three age groups to help ensure a positive, healthy, team
environment.
Birdies
Ages 5-9. Absolute beginners who need to acquire fundamentals
and basic good habits. We offer clinics with a member of our PGA
teaching staff who will help build your child’s confidence,
hand-eye coordination and love for golf!
Eagles
Ages 8-12. This group is
appropriate for both the novice and experienced junior golfer.
Beginners focus on fundamentals while more advanced players
learn shots. Children generally form their athletic identities
at this age, so we attempt to make golf the most positive
experience possible. Our main objectives are having fun, sharing
successes, and skill development!
Scholarship
Ages 13-17. The scholarship
program is a unique training system for juniors with the
potential and dedication to secure a college scholarship. Our
PGA professionals will train each junior on swing mechanics,
course strategy, short game, putting, and all the incidentals
needed to become a champion. The school’s physical therapist and
sport psychologist will develop personal programs relative their
areas of expertise. Prior to a student’s senior year, we will
facilitate the recruiting process by helping create a
professional resume and video that college coaches expect;
introductions and recommendations are made when appropriate. Our
scholarship program consists of one lesson per week (either
Wednesday afternoon or Saturday morning) plus additional time on
the golf course as available with other students. All students
receive their own personalized practice plan and an updated
video diary of their swing. Space for the scholarship program is
limited and acceptance is conditional.
