WHY SPORT PSYCHOLOGY?
Perhaps more today than ever before, athletes are paying attention to the mental side of sport because they realize how important a great mindset is to playing at one’s full potential. Watch any golf tournament or pick up a magazine and it’s easy to see that no two competitors are alike—their equipment, body types and swings are all unique. And yet, each touring pro is capable of posting great numbers, making cuts, and winning tournaments. One reason for consistently good results is the realization that having a positive mental approach to competing is an absolute necessity.

People serious about their golf game understand that sport psychology is more than sitting on a couch talking about fears or problems. Improvements come from getting on course and developing good habits: knowing the components of a sound routine, what to think in between shots, where to focus while standing over the ball, and how to rationalize results/situations.

Believe it or not, as important as the psychology of performance is to your golf game, it may also be one of the easiest aspects to develop. The best golfers tend to keep things simple and consistent. In other words, they do what’s easy and they do it repeatedly. Your challenge is knowing what the "right" things are and then practicing those habits until they’re automatic.

WHY DR. FAYYADH R. YUSUF?
Dr. Yusuf is the performance consultant to the Beardsley School of Golf at Cheval Golf & Country Club located in the Tampa Bay region. He completed his graduated degrees in Sport Psychology (M.Ed.) and Leadership (Ph.D.) from the University of Virginia. During his years at UVa, Dr. Yusuf served as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach. His experiences working with a variety of athletes (e.g. tennis, football, basketball, lacrosse, track & field) have enabled him to bring a fresh perspective to golfers. From juniors to professionals, Dr. Yusuf is able to evaluate the needs of his players and find a way to communicate their needs in an easy and effective manner.

In addition to spending time developing the mindsets of great golfers, Dr. Yusuf continues to work in other arenas as well. His private practice caters to athletes in a variety of sports, business leaders, and he teaches in the College of Business Administration at the University of South Florida.

Personal Mental Training

  • Have you ever experienced a moment where your swing changes from the driving range to the course?

  • Or how the birdie putts seem so much trickier than those for par?

It’s happened to all of us at one time or another: the ability to hit a shot we’re totally capable of making, suddenly vanishes.  Or, we play an incredibly great round, and wonder why it doesn’t happen more often.  Often, the difference in consistently scoring low on the course comes from your attitude.  Fortunately, the art of "thinking good" is like any other part of your game, it can be developed with time and effort. Better yet, we control more of our mental game than any other aspect because neither technology nor genetics are a factor.

If you’ve already invested in your equipment, your swing, and your fitness conditioning, perhaps it’s time to put it all together by developing your mental game!  Introductory 9-hole playing lessons (approximately three hours) are available with Dr. Yusuf.  He’ll evaluate your mental approach to golf and discuss the importance of routines, confidence, focus, composure, trust and commitment. Recommendations for better competitive play are made based on both strengths and weaknesses.
